Title: Chasing Dolphins
Author: September Lynn Gray
Released: 22nd January 2012
My Rating: ★★★★ (4 out of 5)
Charlie loses things. She has, on occasion, lost her job, her home and even her rightful inheritance. Mainly, she loses the people she needs and loves the most. Then, on a night she always feared would come, she meets the wrong man and can only pray she doesn't lose her very life.
Chasing Dolphins wasn't what I expected it'd be. The title seems innocent enough, but the story itself is dark.
September Gray has woven a story rich with loss, pain and desperation. She captures the mindset of a troubled woman perfectly. Details of the main character, Charlie are revealed intermittently, adding to her complexity.
By the second to last chapter, I began to wonder just how much bad luck the Charlie had, but then Gray focused on character growth. The character arc touched down at the other end, shining a ray of light on the story.
'Chasing Dolphins' has a much deeper meaning to it than you first realise. Although this novelette didn't invoke tears or something close, I believe Gray was successful in writing something deep and emotional. Different people would react to this in their own way.
I recommend this for readers aged 17/18+.
